The Return (Tuesday, May 31, 2005)

Well, Sarah and I had fun camping this weekend.

We had to buy extra firewood... in fact, we bought about 4 bundles a day. The last day we bought 7... and ended up leaving one unburned. What a shame.

Sunday it rained. I woke up at 4:00am to the sound of rain pounding on the tent. I got up and started checking the seams to see if the tent was leaking.

I sold a few things on ebay over the weekend as well. It's kind-of fun to make money on stuff that you had laying around anyways. Even after profit sharing with my "partner", I still made a fair amount. Speaking of which, if you've got anything you would like to have sold, let me know. I'll do it for you, for a modest fee (10-15% based on the item and the requested sale price). So either comment here, or your best course of action, let me know in my forums.

Soup of the day (Wednesday, May 25, 2005)

Ready for your daily updates? Here goes...

Tonight I bought my annual park pass from the Game and Parks Commission of Nebraska. So now, I can go to any SRA (State Recreation Area) for a whole year. I also bought a box of 20 hamburger patties (1/4 pound each) and two packages of hot dogs. The entire weekend is gonna be a cookout.

Speaking of cookout, I fired up my brand new Coleman stove. It works wonderfully. I tell you, those folks over at Coleman sure do make camping easy. There is a slight chance for rain, but I'm not scared (I've got plenty of tarps). Bring it on!

And if you can't tell, I'm excited to go camping again. It's only 2 days away now. I can't wait!

Camping trip (Tuesday, May 24, 2005)

Well, we're coming one step closer to our camping trip this weekend.

Tonight Sarah and I went on a shopping spree. We bought a foldable picknick table (really interesting), a coleman lantern, coleman propane stove, a few bottles of propane, some cooking utensils, and a fry pan. Along with a few tarps. There is a slim chance it'll rain this weekend, and I don't intend to get soaked on our first camping trip together. But I think we'll have a lot of fun.

We plan on bringing hamburgers and hot dogs. This whole weekend will just be one great big cook-out. You gotta love that. After all, it is Memorial Day weekend.

So I've been rambling on about what our plans for this weekend are. What are your plans? Feel free to post a comment, or head on over to our forums to discuss this (no sign-up required).

Upcoming holiday weekend (Monday, May 23, 2005)

This coming weekend (in the US anyways) is Memorial Day weekend. And Sarah and I are going camping.

We went out tonight and bought a tent. We got it at Target, and it's really neat. It's overall dimensions are 15'x16'x78". I know, huge for two people. But I like my space. And it's got an attached, enclosed "patio". So at night, when all the little critters are flying around trying to suck our blood out, we can sit inside... but still be outside. Clear as mud? Great.

We're still working out a few remaining details (like whether I should buy my own camp stove or use Sarah's Parents' gear). But I've at least got my own tent, and that's a start.

New news (Saturday, May 21, 2005)

Today is Saturday. Time for the summary of the week.

Last night I began working on an e-bible project. I got my inspiration from e-Sword, a free e-bible program with several add-ins. The reason why I would like to create my own is because God has given me the gift of programming, and I would like to praise him for that.

This week was fairly uneventful other than that. If you're interested in the above mentioned program, let us know in our forums.

Forum upgrade (Thursday, May 19, 2005)

Ok, I upgraded our forums (phpBB) from 2.0.11 to 2.0.15. This was a vital upgrade, as it fixed several bugs and security holes. I'm also looking at some new templates. Unfortunately, nothing meshes real well with the site design, so I may have to design my own.

Head on over to the thread on my forums, and let me know what you would like to see.

Hump-day (Wednesday, May 18, 2005)

Today is Wednesday. That means the week is almost over. So here come your updates:

I'm going to (hopefully) become more active on my own blog. I'm aiming for daily updates. We'll see.

I found out today that I may only have a few more months at (i)Structure. I've been checking out the job scene... man a college degree would help. But my knowledge and experience helps, as well as the fact that I'm going to take my A+ and Server+ certification exams soon. Anyone in Omaha that knows of a good IT job, let me know! The forums would be a great place to let me know.

That's about it for now, maybe more tomorrow.

More?!? (Monday, May 16, 2005)

I know what you're thinking... it can't be possible... can it?

I'm (hopefully) getting a new server (again) soon. A Compaq DL360. The RAID controller died on it, and I can get a new one on the cheap. The first OS I will try to install is Solaris 10. If that won't work (I've had problems in the past) then I may try CentOS. I can always fall back on Gentoo. I may even try *gasp* Windows Server 2000 (probably not but you never know). I'll let you know the outcome.

Monday updates (Monday, May 09, 2005)

Well, it's monday. Yay. Not really. Here are some updates for your enjoyment:

This weekend Sarah moved back home. And she's now home for the long haul. She'll be attending UNO this coming semester, and is thinking about getting involved in band again.

I'm looking into taking some Kung Fu classes. I've been wanting to do this for some time, and now is the time I think. We'll see how that goes.

Along with hosting, I will offer (small-time) web design services as well. Why not have you site designed and hosted by the same company? Of course, I would work off customer specifications, however I would stress XHTML-strict compliance, and a clean design and layout (much like the design you see on this site, as well as my other one).

I'm also looking at testing a CMS (Content Management System) called Mambo. See more here and here.

That's about all for right now. Sorry it's short, but it's Monday morning. I've got to go get my coffee now.

Happy Birthday to me! (Friday, May 06, 2005)

Yesterday I celebrated my 21st birthday! Go me! I can't believe I lived that long. Just kidding!

Today I'm making my first car payment. So that'll be one down, 23 more to go. It's a long road, but it's worth it. It's a great little car.

I'm in the final planning stages of opening my hosting company. I'll be renting server space for the time being, eventually purchasing my own hardware. I'm right now looking at a Sun V20z and V40z. Great machines, with AMD Opteron processors (the latter model even has the option of the new dual-core Opterons)!

I guess that's enough ranting for this morning. Today is Sarah's last day as a sophomore in college, and I'm sure she's breathing a sigh of relief. This weekend she is moving back home, and staying here. She'll be attending UNO here in Omaha next semester. It's about time sweetie. That's it for now.

Recommended read (Wednesday, May 04, 2005)

I came across a great article this morning while searching my regular news sites. The article is entitled Open Source vs Windows: Reality of a Better Paradigm. You can read the article for yourself here. You know, it's funny how true the article is. Windows is not the ideal OS for servers, or anything for that matter. Earlier I wrote a post about replacing the hard drive in Sarah's laptop. After installing Windows, and within minutes of booting, the computer was already infected by two viruses, with a third knocking at the door (the viruses got in while I was installing the firewall... I guess I didn't think anything about the lan cable being plugged in while doing this). I couldn't believe it. In fact, I was dumbfounded. I have installed Linux on several of my systems at home, even FreeBSD on one. And on all of them, I did a network install... I downloaded the core OS from the internet directly to the computer I was installing it on through the installation program. No viruses. Nothing. Of course, my internal network is secure. I've got a hardware firewall that takes care of most of the problems, and for those few pests that do get through, I've got software firewalls and virus scanners (on my two Windows machines I do have). Anyways, read the article. You'll be amused.

Hosting (Monday, May 02, 2005)

Very soon, I will be starting a hosting company. Prices will be low. So if you're interested in having your own website, and don't have a whole lot of money, then I'll be your man!

Plans are to include an eCommerce solution (osCommerce and/or Agora Cart), message boards, and more! Be sure to let me know if you'd be interested, and I'll post here as soon as the doors have opened!
