Trick or Treat?! (Sunday, October 31, 2004)

That's right, folks. It's that scary day again! Halloween! This year is just flying by. Anyways, an update...

I got a new job. I'll be working for AAA Nebraska/Lincolnland towing as a dispatcher. The job is in Lincoln, so that will pressure me to move down there here very soon so as to avoid having to pay a lot of money to commute. Hopefully it will be easy for me to move. I'll bet it will. I can't wait, and yet I'm kinda scared at the same time. I've never been on my own before, so it'll be an adjustment. But I think I can manage.

I fell in love with a new computer. It's an Apple. I've never been too fond of Apple, until it released OS X which was based on FreeBSD. Suddenly I had a whole new respect for Apple. And then I used one, and all I can say was... wow. So I'm a believer. And as soon as I can scrape up the funds, I'll be purchasing one myself. Moving on...

Vote Bush/Cheney 2004!

No more beta! (Thursday, October 28, 2004)

Today I have moved our blog from beta to non-beta. What wonderful news! The decision was made in part by the fact that most "growing pains" have been eliminated, and also on the fact that today is Sarah and I's one year anniversary. Happy anniversary sweetie!

Also of note, the CSS for the website has changed a tiny bit. Links are by default bold and dark blue, however when you hold your mouse over them, they are orange and underlined. More exciting changes to come!

Happy Anniversary! (Wednesday, October 27, 2004)

That's right folks. Today is the 28th of October. And that means that Sarah and I have been dating for one year. Amazing, isn't it? Well I think so.

So we've been dating a year, and we now have our own web site... so things seem to be progressing quite well. And honestly, it's late, so I can't think of anything else to type. So I'll finish up for now, but expect more writing later today.

Google my... laptop!?! (Sunday, October 24, 2004)

Ok, we all do it. I'm talking about Googling... the art of searching the web for something a la Google. I must do it a million times a day, mostly just to see if a certain section of my website has been cataloged by Google's crawler (ahem... come on guys). Heck, I even have it set as my home page for my favorite browser in the world.

But what's this? I can Google my laptop? That's just creepy... at least that was my first impression. But tonight I downloaded it. What could it hurt? And I am very amazed. A simple search for my name, and in the blink of an eye (literally) I had 96 results. Wow. That's all I could say (just ask Sarah). And imagine my surprise after a search for my friend Craig's name, a copy of my resume came up (as I have him listed as a reference). That's right, it'll not only search file names (like Windows Search), but also file contents! Something I've been able to do on my FreeBSD machine, but until now have not been able to do on my laptop.

It's a shame, however, that I can't take full advantage of it. Presently it only indexes sites visited with Microsoft's Internet Explorer, and emails sent and received with either Outlook or Outlook Express. Unfortunately I use neither (actually that may be fortunately). And I don't have AOL Instant Messenger archive conversations. So that immediately removes 3 search mediums. But it's being said that Google is working on additional "compatability". I can't wait to see the day that this thing will search through my history in Firefox, and allow me to easily search for a term in the many hundreds of emails that lurk in Thunderbird...

Anyways, take a trip on over to our forums, where we currently have a poll running on what you think about Google Desktop Search.

Well, that's about all I have for now. Feel free to leave your comments and/or experiences in our forums. If you'd care to download Google Desktop Search, you can visit their site at http://desktop.google.com.

Good news! (Friday, October 22, 2004)

The beta phase may be nearing an end! There were three major concerns with this blog (which is why it was in a beta phase). They were:

1) Bandwidth. It would appear, however, after an initial investigation, that the blog doesn't use any more bandwidth (per "hit") than a regular page. Most of the bandwidth "hogging" would take place when I change the template, in which case I have to republish the entire blog. But I think I have worked out most of the bugs, so I shouldn't have to be doing much more of that. Problem solved (for now).

2) Integration. I wasn't sure how hard (or easy) it would be to host a blog on my site instead of blogspot.com. As it turns out, the process is relatively easy. Problem solved.

3) Unnecessary. I do have the forums set up, and I even have a topic called "rants and raves", which was basically intended to be something similar to this. However, I have determined that the blog is more or less a "diary" and the forums are good for "discussions". So they don't cancel each other out, and one is just as important as the other. Problem solved.

So keep looking for the unveiling of the blog, done AaronandSarah.net style!

Update (Thursday, October 21, 2004)

Well, the beta phase is coming along great. The template seems to fit right in, with perhaps a few minor problems. So far, so good. Still a bit more testing involved, and perhaps some more user feedback before it comes out of beta. Keep checking back!

Second Post... (Tuesday, October 19, 2004)

Well folks, I changed the template so it matches that of our main page. Let me know what you think of it. Additionally, let me know of any "problems". Thanks!

Testing (Sunday, October 17, 2004)

Greetings everyone! Just so you know, Sarah and I are currently testing this area. We're considering setting up a permanent blog here, but for right now it's in "beta" phase. Stay tuned for more updates!
