Google Talk (Wednesday, August 24, 2005)
Well, it's official folks... today Google released their own iteration of an Instant Messenger. Called Google Talk, it seems fairly promising. Based on the Jabber platform, it uses open standards, and includes it's on VoIP service.
So how does it stand up? Well, here's my initial assessment.
I think it may be a force to reckon with once it's no longer a beta. In it's current state, it's very rudimentary. It doesn't do emoticons (although it will change the font color to blue when you enter a typical emoticon such as ":-P"). Basically, it's your average text chat. But what sets it apart is the VoIP capability (and not to mention there are no ads anywhere, until AIM *grr*). All in all, it works fairly well.
If you'd like to test out Google Talk, my username is cajunman4life. Feel free to chat with me sometime. And if you need a gmail invite, just let me know, I've got 50!
