Stranger returns! (Thursday, March 31, 2005)
Ok, it's been a while, so you know the drill... here's a quick run-down of what's happened in the last few weeks or so:
Tonight I finished getting Gentoo Linux installed on my HP NetServer LPr. I love the ports system of FreeBSD, but it's been my experience that the Linux kernel provides better SMP (in short, multiple processor) support. This HP box just so happens to be one that has multiple processors. Gentoo is where the Linux kernel meets the FreeBSD ports tree. One simple command... "emerge (packagename)" and Gentoo will download the source, compile it, install it on my system, and even manage the dependencies for me. How perfect is that?
And I'm tired now. It took me nearly a week to get Gentoo installed and fully working on this particular box. But, I would strongly recommend Gentoo for all of you out there.
